Air Powered Hunting

From AirgunArena

Jump to: navigation, search

I started seriously shooting and hunting with airguns a few years ago, but I first shot one when I was nine years old. My father gave my first airgun, a Daisy Grizzly. The first hunting gun I bought was a cheapo Daisy 880 from Wal-Mart. I soon realized that it wasn't hardly worth the cardboard box it came in, so I purchased a Gamo Hunter 220. That held me for a while and I took my first rabbit and my first squirrel with it. But that didn't quite do it either, so I got a Crosman 1377 air pistol. The 1377 is the best air pistol that I've ever shot. A few weeks ago I bought a Benjamin Discovery. The accuracy of the Discovery totaly blew me away. A friend also gave me a Crosman Pumpmaster 760, which is purely a plinking gun.

I'll have hunting stories as they happen, and reviews on airguns as I get them. I will only do gun reviews if I like the gun.

Please visit my website at www.airpoweredhunting.web.officelive.com [1]

I have some hunting stories and videos there from the last few years of hunting. Also on the site is part 1 of my video review on the Benjamin Discovey. After I finish reviewing the Disco I'll start a video review of the Crosman 1377 pistol.

I have finished my video review of the Crosman 1377 air pistol. It is a great little gun that I'm looking forward to squirrel hunting with this fall. Check it out at http://airpoweredhunting.web.officelive.com/airgunvideo.aspx

Delay in Video Posting Add Comment
Well, it looks like it will be another month or so before I can finish the Disco review. I bought a new video camera to use while shooting, but unfortunately it got wet and is ruined. I talked with Tom Gaylord about my pellet problem. He said that the tinned Crosman Premiers are a lot of times just as good as the boxed ones. They do seem to be the most accurate for me, and they are also just about the cheapest pellets I can find.

Initial 25 Yard Shooting with the Disco Add Comment
My initial groups at 25 yards seem to point to the cheap Crosman Premiers as the most accurate pellet in the Benjamin Discovery. My shooting form was WAY off today so I'll have to do some more testing another day. JSBs should be much more accurate than the Premiers that come in a tin.

Plinking Add Comment
I love plinking. It is always nice to just get outside on a nice day and shoot pop cans at long ranges. This afternoon, I went to my backyard with my Benjamin Discovery to shoot at fifty, sixty, and sixty-five yards. After setting up the cans, I walked back to the fence that separates the front yard from the back, climbed over, and used it as a rest. The accuracy of the Discovery is amazing to me. It may not be great to people who are used to shooting $1000 guns, but for a person that has just gotten into shooting airguns that are more accurate than a .22 rimfire, this gun is astounding. It was hitting every time at sixty yards and the vast majority of the time at sixty-five. I don't quite know the holdover at 65 yet, so I was just trying to figure that out. Yeah, I know that it should be about four inches at 65 when the gun is sighted in at 20 yards, but figuring out just what four inches looks like at that range is the difficult part. I have been using a Tasco 3-9x40 Silver Antler scope with a duplex reticle. With the scope set at nine power, all that I have to do at sixty yards is aim with the top of the bottom post. The last few shots of the day when the air gauge was in the yellow zone, I tried to hit at seventy yards. But the air was too low to do much at that point and I couldn't get a hit. When you get a little tired of punching paper, you might just try to relax with some casual plinking.

.22 Caliber Match Add Comment
Hey, everybody. Bill Clarke said that he would start a .22 caliber airgun match if enough people are interseted. If you would like to compete with a .22 caliber airgun, mention your interest on the eMatch restrictions forum under target shooting.
